Now Running 1.8.1

We've decided after all the issues with the 1.8 snapshots that we were going to stick with release versions from now on. 1.8.1 is mostly just a bugfix update anyway, so we just stuck with 1.8 until the new version was officially released.

There's not really much to report; as usual, the new version was tested and then set live on Superstes Noctis. Things seem smoother at spawn now (knock on wood) and that should make it easier and more fun to continue Surviving the Night.

Wrapping up Year One

Superstes Noctis launched on November 18, 2013. Year two with our hosting company starts on November 17, (apparently they believe in 264-day years) but not much is changing as far as hosting is concerned.

We had discussed starting a new world, but we decided the existing world has much more to be explored and built so it would be premature to end it and start over from scratch. So rather than change a bunch of things, we're just going to make it our goal to do more in year two than we did in year one! Hopefully this year on the server will see a ton of improvement to the server world and we'll grow it quite a bit.

We hope for a great second year with our server! Hopefully fans of the server videos will enjoy it too. Got any ideas for the server? Feel free to contact us at superstesnoctis@yahoo.com and share your advice, we'd love to hear from you. Remember about the Noctis ASMP server as well, we're still working on that! Check that out at http://noctis-mc.blogspot.com for more information on that. Thank you for your continued interest in our work and good luck with year two of surviving the night!

Now running 1.8-pre1

The first prerelease build of Minecraft 1.8, dubbed 1.8-pre1, is available now! After so much time waiting, the "Bountiful Update" is right around the corner!

This is a short update, just informing everyone that the server is running 1.8-pre1 and that the final release of 1.8 is coming very soon. We're super excited for 1.8, and we hope you are too! Get pumped and good luck surviving the night!

Manually Managing Versions

The service used to host Superstes Noctis (MCPro Hosting) has changed the way their services work recently, supporting the old way things were managed but prompting server administrators to switch to the new method. As of Sunday, August 10, 2014 @ 3:29 AM PDT, the server is now running using one of these new features: manual version selection, which allows the server's administrator (that's me!) to manually choose what version of Minecraft is run for the server. This includes old versions of the game, (even Alpha and Beta versions) development snapshots, Bukkit, FTB, Technic, and more.

As of the time of this posting, we are running 14w32d; thanks to this new system, the server will be able to be updated manually and we can avoid issues with new snapshots! When a new snapshot comes out, I will be able to test it in a single-player world, or even load up the server world in single-player, to make sure things work before deciding to update the live server. Additionally, if there are any issues with it once it is live, I can restore from a backup (yes, I finally got it figured out so I can do server backups on my local machine and not rely on the hosting service's method of backing up the server) and go back to the previous snapshot that was working before. This should mean less overall downtime for the server when there are issues with snapshots of the game, and more time available to enjoy gameplay on the server!

If you have any questions, of course feel free to contact me for clarification! Until next time, good luck surviving the night!

Snapshot Woes

New features are cool! It can be really tempting to upgrade to Minecraft Snapshots, especially recently with all the changes announced. Minecraft 1.8 is going to be an absolutely massive update, and it was so tempting we gave in and decided awhile back to update to the snapshots. They were stable at the time... but newer snapshots have proved to be otherwise, and it has caused a lot of trouble (and downtime) for the Superstes Noctis server. For now we are running 14w27b, which works... kinda. Exiting the Nether has proved troublesome, and Anika_Strizuki even got teleported to the edge of the map, right by the world border. In Survival mode, that isn't really something you want to happen.

We've learned our lesson: once 1.8 is publicly released, we will no longer be using snapshots! Learn from our mistake and do the same for your worlds (and especially servers) by only venturing into snapshots with your worlds if you make a backup beforehand and use a separate minecraft.jar.

This has been a Public Service Announcement from the Superstes Noctis team. Play smart, play safe, and good luck surviving the night!

Upping the Stakes

Superstes Noctis is all about Surviving the Night, right? After all, that is the name of the server. But if it is too easy to Survive the Night, it ceases to be a challenge at all... and what fun is that?

Effective immediately, the Superstes Noctis server is in "Normal" difficulty mode instead of "Easy" like it used to be. It's still the same server with the same map, all that is changing is the difficulty of surviving in it; this includes mobs dealing more damage on hits, increased mob spawning rates, more fall damage, and various other things such as Wither Skeletons and the Wither Boss being able to apply the Wither effect to players.

This should make things much more interesting! Now more than ever, good luck surviving the night!

Grand Opening of the Ender Ender

After many hours of continuous work, the Ender Ender is now functional in The End on the Superstes Noctis server for server members to use! This was a massive build, which uses a TON of End Stone, Stained Glass, and Stone Bricks. It also added to timmc94's death count...

The "Ender Ender" is a design made by Panda4994 and modified by Docm77. It is one of the most efficient designs out there, although it wasn't built as efficiently on our server (we don't need as many Endermen, so we don't need as many layers with spawning platforms) and it used up way more blocks than expected. The same design was used on timmc94's old server (McCraft) last year, although that was built in Creative mode since that server used it a lot for massive builds. It is a lot harder to build in Survival mode!

The biggest thing to note about the design of the Ender Ender in Minecraft 1.8 (the snapshots anyway) is that now the new Endermite mobs spawn occasionally on the killing floor when the Endermen try to teleport around. They seem to be glitching out most of the time as of 14w20b, where they spin around randomly and cannot be killed. It is believed that the user's client thinks they are there while the server and other users' clients do not; every time these glitched-out Endermites appear only one person can see them and they disappear if the person relogs. Hopefully this will be fixed for the final release of 1.8, as it is a glitch within the game and not a problem with the server.

Head to the End to use the Ender Ender and, as always, good luck surviving the night!

Boss Battle Roadmap

On the private Superstes Noctis server, the time is coming near to fight the Enderdragon and Wither. Because of this, the roadmap presented here was made to give a general timeline and order to the operations to be done as a part of this series.
  1. Collection of the Eyes of Ender
  2. Group Enderdragon Fight
  3. Enderdragon Egg Display Creation
  4. Nether Fortress Wither Skeleton Farming
  5. Wither Battle Location Scouting
  6. Group Wither Fight
  7. Mansion Courtyard Beacon Construction
Hopefully some dates will be available soon for these stages of the roadmap to make it easier to keep up-to-date with the events on the Superstes Noctis server.

Be sure to tune in to timmc94's YouTube Videos and Twitch.tv Livestreams for footage of events in this roadmap. Thanks again for your support, and good luck surviving the night!

Welcome to Superstes Noctis!

Superstes Noctis has been around since November 2013, but due to the private nature of the server a public webpage was never created. Now that development is underway for the Noctis Fan Server, blogs have been created separately for both servers. Be sure to check out the blog for the Fan Server with public information at http://noctis-mc.blogspot.com/
