SN2 Task List Update - Winter 2019

A lot has happened in the short time since SN2 launched, which is what we wanted... although not all has occurred as we were hoping, as is life. This post is intended as an update to some of the changes coming soon to Superstes Noctis, both in the SN2 game world and outside it around our communities and online presences. As with other future plan posts I make for this server, none of this is set in stone until it actually happens and even then changes can often be reversed if needed as well.

  • 15 December 2018: Changes to SN Facebook group chat and Discord.
  • 18 December 2018: Community Block Exchange (CBE) construction begins.
  • 25 December 2018: SN2 Christmas celebration.
  • 31 December 2018: SN2 New Year celebration.
  • 1 January 2019: Creative spawn-building period ends. SN2 switches into Survival mode and world border expands to 327 blocks.
  • 4 January 2019: Community Block Exchange (CBE) opens at spawn for easy acquisition of common blocks and items, reducing and simplifying grind without giving full Creative mode to anyone and killing benefits of living in a Survival world.
  • 6 January 2019: First full SN2 world backup.
  • 20 January 2019: World border expands to 350 blocks.
  • 1 February 2019: SN2 performance review and evaluation.

Again, remember that nothing here is set in stone until it happens and much of it can be reversed if necessary. Superstes Noctis has always been a democracy, and as such the matters in these plans are up for discussion if members of the server group wish to address them. The hope is that these changes will improve the experience on the server and in the server community for all members, and make it more fun to continue surviving the night.

Announcing Superstes Noctis 2!

Superstes Noctis is five years old today. For a Minecraft server, that’s a really long time! The game world was created in Minecraft 1.6 back in November 2013, starting out with just three members. It has come a long way since then, a sprawling map with tons of builds of wide varieties where many diverse adventures have taken place. But with the updates the game has received since then, the world file has gotten much bigger and more complex (SN is ending up at 822 MB now with just the world files) and it is no longer feasible to continue in this world due to the latency issues that have gotten so much worse as of late.

Every time SN has an anniversary, we discuss the possibility of creating a new world file and starting over. Unlike in past years, we’ve decided now to actually do it... so this is the end of Superstes Noctis. It’s not a sad occasion though — Superstes Noctis 2 is inbound to replace it! We are changing some things up this time around to increase the quality of life on the server, adapting it to the needs and desires of the playerbase whilst also making optimizations to reduce latency and keep the server running smoother for longer.

Today marked the final backup of the first Superstes Noctis world. The online world map has been updated one final time, and for the first time in SN history a singleplayer map of our game world is available exclusively for server members to download and do with as they please on their own. Additionally, November 18-25 is what we’ve coined Creative Week — the server is now running in Creative mode for the first time ever, and members have the freedom to spend their last week in this online world however they please [within the confines of Creative mode’s permissions without running any commands]. Will it all go up in smoke? Probably. Will TNT be involved? Definitely. Are we going to cry about it? ...maybe, we’ll see. No judgment.

One of the big changes for SN2 is going to be a limited world border. The exact starting size of the border is TBD, but it will be incredibly small — which will keep the world size down, both helping with performance and ensuring we won’t need to travel thousands of blocks to generate new terrain when future game updates add a bunch of new content to explore. (1.14 and 1.15 both have new changes like that, and those updates are coming sometime in the near future) At indeterminate points in time going forward, the world border will expand to accommodate more builds and exploration; there is no set plan for how that will unfold, so we’re just playing it by ear and doing what the group wants while still working to keep the map smaller and less laggy for longer.

In an unprecedented move for SN, we may even introduce periods of time with controlled use of Creative mode to work on the areas we don’t particularly want to work on in Survival. This is likely going to just be the spawn area, and it will be closely monitored to make sure the builds are plausible for Survival mode and don’t ruin the “Survival feel” of SN. It’s definitely not an exact science, but we’ll see how things turn out. In addition to all that, we may also implement some custom villagers or similar systems (that can run without mods or plugins, of course) for trading basic materials for building. Again, the idea is bare bones at this point... we’re unsure how it will end up [or if we’ll even do it at all] but it’s something we’re open to and actually considering.

There is more happening for SN2 than the aforementioned changes as well, but that’s a basic look at how things are changing for the next version of the server. We’re excited to see how this turns out and design a brand new world from scratch to form new adventures in... and maybe, just maybe, we’ll sleep in-game less often and actually try to survive the night.

Superstes Noctis Discord Server

For the past year, Superstes Noctis has been a community on Twitch Messenger (previously Curse) due to tight Twitch integration. (See the post on that here) However, that integration couldn't outweigh the fact that the majority of members didn't use the service. People joined, but nothing really happened.

So we're finally making the move to Discord. The reasoning for this is rather silly: Discord integration was just added to Xbox One the day of this post, so I've just now made a Discord account. Now that the air is clear on that, let's never speak of it again.

The Superstes Noctis Discord server is going to be running the same way the old Twitch Messenger server was running (which, by the way, still exists but is not being supported any longer) and is open to all whitelisted members of the Superstes Noctis Minecraft server. Time will tell what role it plays, but it is now the official voice channel for users playing on the server and will hopefully fill a role while members are offline as well.

The structure of the Superstes Noctis Discord server is as follows:

  • [text] general: Conversation related to the Superstes Noctis server, excluding technical discussion.
  • [text] behind-the-scenes: Conversation related to the technical aspects of the server. Report problems here to keep them out of the main text channel, and I'll be sharing such things as well [provided I remember to do so]. If you don't care about this stuff, you can mute this channel without missing out on the main channel.
  • [text] off-topic: Members of Superstes Noctis love off-topic conversation. That's perfectly fine, but please keep it in this channel so those who wish to do so can mute it without missing out on the main text channel.
  • [voice] General: Join this voice channel while playing to chat with other members! You can join when offline too, but if there are any issues remember that online players get priority here.
  • [voice] Off-Topic: Similarly to the off-topic text channel, join here to talk about random stuff. Unlike text, off-topic conversation is technically allowed in the main voice channel as well... but if people are online and you're not, diverting here may be a good idea in certain situations to avoid anxiety-inducing, interruption-rampant conversation mazes that are inconvenient for online players. It's not an exact science.

There will surely be changes going forward, but this is how things are starting off over there. Questions? Contact Timothy (that's me!) for an invite to the Discord server (if you're a whitelisted Superstes Noctis member) and of course feel free to ask any questions. I'm not a Discord expert (for the reason explained above I said not to speak of again... so hush) but it's fairly intuitive and I'm learning fast. Here's hoping the Superstes Noctis Discord server enhances our continuing efforts to survive the night!

Chickenfest 2018

Hey everyone! It's been awhile, hasn't it? Interest in the server has been steadily dropping still, and now it is a bit up but still not great. We needed ideas to bring interest back... how about a festival?

For those who have been following us for awhile, you may have heard of a little something called Chickenfest which is a tradition dating back to the server that predated Superstes Noctis. That old server was mostly in Creative mode, so Chickenfest (which started very spontaneously) was seriously just a large structure way up in the sky that was repeatedly and rapidly spawning chickens to fall on the ground below. Needless to say, things got a little out of control.

Chickenfest 2016
Since then, we've celebrated Chickenfest on an extremely irregular basis. The first Chickenfest was in August 2013, and there is no concrete record (that we can find) of when the follow-ups were... apart from an adventure involving Chickens last year on Superstes Noctis which we jokingly dubbed "Chickenfest 2017" but was really just Angie and Timothy spamming Miranda's restaurant/bar build with chicken eggs. That was definitely the most lackluster iteration of the festival to date, but it was still entertaining for the three of us involved with it... however, the plan to bring back Chickenfest this year is going to require more planning and a larger scale to attempt to bring back Superstes Noctis, at least a little bit.

Chickenfest 2018 is currently scheduled for a full week: Monday, February 26 to Sunday, March 4 with a finale event on the last day of the festival.

What's the plan for Chickenfest this year? Right now we just have preliminary ideas, but the core of the festival is obviously... poultry. The plan is to fill the week full of chicken-themed activities, a few of which include:
  • A temporary chicken exhibit (with live chickens) in a fenced-in area in Noctis Square.
  • A special chicken shop (with cooked chicken) next to the chicken exhibit in Noctis Square.
  • Chicken-themed events at community builds at or near spawn, such as the horse track and bumper boat arena.
  • A massive Chickenfest sign atop Noctis Manor.
  • Chickenfest decorations on several community builds at or near spawn.
  • An egg booth for aquiring chicken eggs that are to be thrown every which way in the festival area (spawn and surrounding areas) to enhance the hilarity and insanity of the festival.
  • A special guide to all official Chickenfest activities, their locations on the server, and the times they are available if applicable.
Again, to clarify... Chickenfest is still early in the planning phase. Work on those above bullet points is to commence shortly to ensure readiness for the festival, but other ideas are still being formulated and the final design and experience of the festival is yet to be seen.  There will hopefully be videos (or livestreams) of Chickenfest as well, over on Timothy's YouTube and/or Twitch Channels... for news on that, stay glued to his Twitter account. This post may also be updated as time goes on with more details, and hopefully the Chickenfest guide when that is completed as well.

If you're a member of the Superstes Noctis server, we hope to see you the week of Chickenfest and would love your input on the planning process as well. If you're not a member of the server, we hope you'll enjoy the content created regarding Chickenfest and would appreciate any constructive feedback you may have for us as well. In the meantime, we wish you (and your chickens) the best of luck in your continuing battles to survive the night!
